Glossary
Every term you'll meet, in plain English.
Software words, copyright words, and the exams and programs centres in Australia and New Zealand run. Each one links to where it matters on the site.
- Approve before publish
- Nothing reaches a student until the centre has seen it and said yes.
- Assignment
- A set from the centre's material, given to a cohort with a due date.
- Banded pricing
- A monthly fee set by the size of the centre, not per student.
- Bring your own content
- The centre supplies the material. The platform supplies everything else.
- CLNZ licence
- The New Zealand copyright licence. A for-profit centre needs the business one, not the education one.
- Cohort
- A class as the centre names it: Year 6 Selective, Tuesday 4pm.
- Content library
- A supplier's own bank of lessons and questions, the same for every subscriber.
- Data minimisation
- Holding the least personal information the job needs. A centre can run on first name and initial.
- Data residency
- Where the data physically lives. For this platform, Australia.
- Equivalent forms
- Recognising that 1/2, 0.5 and 50% are the same answer, when the key allows.
- Explanation
- What a stuck student gets at 9pm: a hint, then an example, then the solution, from the centre's page.
- Export on demand
- The industry term for pulling everything back out of a platform. We do not offer it, and here is why that is not the risk it sounds like.
- Fidelity score
- How faithfully a document was read before anything was made from it.
- Grounding
- The rule that every generated item must trace to a source page.
- Hallucination
- When an AI system states something confidently that isn't in its sources or isn't true.
- Homework policy
- A one-page statement of what's expected between sessions and what happens if it isn't done.
- Instant marking
- Marked the moment a student submits, against the centre's key.
- Material rights
- Who owns each document a centre teaches from: wrote it, licensed it, copied it, not sure.
- NAPLAN
- The national assessment in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 across reading, writing, language conventions and numeracy.
- NCEA
- New Zealand's National Certificate of Educational Achievement, Levels 1 to 3, mid-reform.
- OCR
- Optical character recognition: turning a scanned image of a page into text.
- Opportunity Class
- The NSW placement test sat in Year 4 for Year 5 and 6 opportunity classes.
- Parent report
- A fortnightly one-page report to each parent, with the centre's logo, from the centre's address.
- Pilot
- One class, one term, the centre's material, credited against setup.
- Privacy Act
- The Privacy Act 1988 in Australia and the Privacy Act 2020 in New Zealand.
- Re-enrolment
- The Term 4 decision, made by a parent who has either seen progress or hasn't.
- Read-out
- The written report at the end of a pilot: usage, movement, parents, and what didn't work.
- Scan quality
- What makes a scan convert well: straight, 300 dpi, full page, good light.
- Scholarship test
- Tests run by or for independent schools to award scholarships, typically Years 5 to 8.
- Selective test
- Entrance tests for selective government schools: NSW Selective, Victorian select-entry, WA GATE, SA Ignite, Queensland Academies.
- Senior secondary
- Years 11 and 12: HSC, VCE, QCE, WACE, SACE, and NCEA in New Zealand.
- Setup fee
- A one-time fee for converting the centre's material and setting up the branded platform.
- Single tenant
- Software where each customer runs on separate infrastructure. StudyPro isolates every centre's space and data; separate infrastructure per centre is planned.
- Statutory Education Licence
- The Australian licence that lets educational institutions, including tutoring organisations, copy limited portions of published works.
- Term 4 churn
- The students who finish Term 4 and don't come back in Term 1.
- The six days
- The time between one session and the next, when the material could be working and usually isn't.
- Timed set
- A practice paper from the centre's material, run on the clock.
- Topic heatmap
- Students against topics, coloured strong to weak. Ten seconds to read.
- Tutor dashboard
- The Monday-morning view: who did it, who didn't, what the class got wrong.
- White label
- Software that carries your brand and none of the supplier's.
- Worked solution
- The method, step by step, not just the answer.
